Default Help with GMA 500 drivers EMGD or Poulsbo

Okay, can anyone assist me with the proper install of These drivers for Backtrack 5 GNOME edition : ) I will be eternally grateful, running bt5 in 800x600 on a little dell mini 1010 is hell... Now, I have got these drivers working on my dual boot of Ubuntu just fine but can't seem to get them working for Backtrack.

thank you for any help : )

Add PPA repository and install the drivers:

This is what I did on my UMPC when installed Ubuntu 10.04 (BT5 is based on 10.04):
        $sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa && sudo apt-get update
        $sudo apt-get install poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config
Please be adviced, I have no idea if this will work on BT5, but it should cause its based on Ubuntu 10.04!

    Hi legnox

I'm working on the poulsbo GMA500 drivers now but the solution appears to be either to downgrade the kernel or upgrade Xorg.

Both of which are detrimental to the smooth running of Backtrack 5.

You may have been able to get poulsbo working satisfactorily in the standard Ubuntu releases but backtrack 5 is far from standard!

The GMA500 team only compile against the kernel for a particular release and the Xorg that was part of it.

Using the GMA500 PPA's on Backtrack 5 without modification of the latter will leave you with an unusable system.

Backtrack 5 has a relatively modern kernel of 2.6.38 but an Xorg that appears to be 1.7.6 as was part of Lucid.

None of the GMA500 scripts will match that configuration!

I'm currently testing Backtrack 5 with kernel which has poulsbo working fine but may have broken more things than I care to mention!

I'm surprised you can't get 1024x600 on the Dell, I believe that is its native resolution as I can get 1600x768 on the Vaio P with a
    clean untouched backtrack 5 install.

If I get this working to my satisfaction I'll create a How-To or something because there are a lot of machines out there with the poulsbo chipset.

    Take care,
