Default HP dv5 not recognizing external output

It seems as though my laptop thinks any external display I plug in, be it via HDMI or VGA, is the default monitor.

In display configuration it shows no sign of any external display, and even marks both as 'default' when Identifying Outputs. Has anyone else had this problem or anything similar?

Any known fixes would be greatly appreciated,

Hi, common problem with ubuntu 10.04 not detecting external monitor, the only way around it for me was plugging the hdmi or vga and then reboot, sometimes it will not show in full screen but it works.
    good luck
