Question DHCP Lease too short, won't detect static IP

I'm using the BT4 VMware image, and the DHCP lease time is around 30 minutes. I can't change this setting via VMware while its in bridged mode. I followed the instructions in "How To Start Networking in Backtrack" to no avail.

Here is the contents of /etc/network/interfaces

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
    and the contents of resolv.conf

    domain localdomain
    search localdomain
Also (just noticed) that it seems to have reverted my nameservers to the default? I had them changed to OpenDNS.

Thanks for any help. This is totally ruining my port forwarding with reverse-connecting metasploit payloads.

Weird. Try configuring the interface using ifconfig and manually setting default route and DNS as opposed to doing whatever you are doing now (running "/etc/init.d/networking start" I assume). It sounds like the dhcp client (dhclient from memory) is somehow getting triggered and used for the interface configuration, so configuring things manually in the simplest and most straightforward manner possible might allow you to avoid whatever is causing this. At minimum, trying different methods of configuration may allow you to narrow down the cause of the problem.

Alternatively, you could configure the DHCP server to assign you a fixed address and the correct DNS servers, assuming you control that server.
Capitalisation is important. It's the difference between "Helping your brother Jack off a horse" and "Helping your brother jack off a horse".
