    Question Airmon & Wireshark & IEEE 802.11

    I'm very sorry, I searched the whole net for an answer to make IEEE 802.11 captures work with my D-Link DWL-650G (Atheros) wireless lan adapter. After a lot of research I found it out but it doesn't work.

    I did the following:

    1. ran airmon-ng to set wlan0 to monitor mode --> result: mon0
    2. opened Wireshark and wanted to choose mon0 to capture the whole WLAN traffic of my WLAN

    When I choose the mon0 interface in Wireshark there isn't any IP address for this interface so I cannot capture any traffic from other machines in the WLAN. But mon0 must be the right interface, because it's the monitor mode of wlan0.

    Wireshark also shows in the Link-Layer Header Type field: "IEEE 802.11 plus radiotap WLAN header". But I cannot choose it, it's blind.

    So, what's the problem?
    Why isn't there a IP address for the mon0 interface and why isn't it possible to choose a Link-Layer Header Type in Wireshark after setting the wireless adapter to monitor mode with airmon-ng?

    Thanks for your help!

    Greetings from Germany.

    Try googling these keywords and then figuring out the difference.

    Monitor mode & Promiscuous mode
