Got it going - heres what i did :
opened a terminal and typed
apt-get install rungetty

Then nano /etc/event.d/tty1 and edited the last line
#exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty1
exec /sbin/rungetty tty1 --autologin root
then nano /root/.bash_profile

now it autologs in and boots by itself. The pointers were appreciated Thanks again.
I followed these instructions exactly, and when I rebooted it, it just hangs during the loading screen on "Starting System Tools Backends: system-tools-backends"...

Your thoughts?

Did you by chance mean that not actually changing the entry to what you had in the box, but rather changing the line FROM "exec /sbin/getty 38400 ttyl" TO "exec /sbin/rungetty ttyl --autoligin root" ?
