Default BT 2 live cd boot problem

I'm trying to run the live cd on my Panasonic CF-28 800Mhz, 512Mb. The cd boots all the to the password login, i login ok and that's as far as i can get. Whatever command i try, startx or flux, i get a completely blank screen which is difficult to get out of. If i type xconf i get :- /usr/bin/xconf: line 58: 8413 Aborted /usr/X11R6/bin/X -configure 2>/dev/null cannot run auto config. Try xorgsetup commands.
If i try and go through the whole xorgsetup it doesn't make any difference. I've tried the cd on a newer laptop and it worked without any problems. I would like to use BT on this laptop so any help would be welcomed.

a dump of lspci would probably be useful along with maybe dmesg. Have you also tried using vesa mode?

I downloaded another copy and this one works fine. This will teach me not to trust a cd even if it does work on another comp.
