Bt4 hangs after selected from grub

okay i am new to bt4
I am a moderate Linux user
When i installed linux on pc today i was having problems from the cd not booting
and then when i got bt4 finally installed i rebooted and grub tries to start bt4
and then it shows this

Starting up ...
Not responding

note dual booting with win xp pro

but xp boots fine and sow does memtest

also this was happening from the live cd where on only frambuffer 800x600 would work
