lilo in a dual boot

I am trying to dual boot bt2 and xp on my laptop.
It is a 50 gig scsi hardrrive so the partitions are /dev/sda.
This is all done from a usb pen drive
I followed the dual boot xp and bt2 video from offensive security, but when it came time to modify lilo.conf, it just didnt work.

these are my partitions
sda1 - windows xp ntfs
sda2 - swap
sda3 - kernel and boot files
sda4 - root
when the video started to show how to modify the lilo.conf , I followed exactly has he had done, except changing the /dev/hda to /dev/sda and putting the proper partitions.

so lilo.conf ended up being like this (without messages)

boot = /dev/sda
prompt
timeout = 1200
change-rules
reset

vga 773

other = /dev/sda1
label = xp
table = /dev/sda


image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/sda4
label = bt
read-only
-----------------------------

when I type lilo -v I get :

Reading boot sector from /dev/sda
fatal: trying to map files from unnamed device 0x000d (NFS/Raid mirror down?)

I am probably making a stupid mistake somewhere but I cant see it, or I should be doing something completely different because of my hard drive settings.

any suggestions?

I've never seen that error before. The most common mistake in this situation is that the user has not executed the chroot properly. That would be the command right before editing lilo where you

bt~#chroot /mnt/backtrack /bin/bash

At that point your prompt should change to bt~\ if you have completed the chroot correctly.

It was as you stated I had not done the chroot command correctly and wrote lilo any way and got the same.

Re did chroot.

Got it installed and everything running perfectly.

While we are here though, my laptop would not boot from the usb unless I typed in the cheat bt acpi=off. If booting from lilo on the HDD, will I have to retype this same cheat or can I do without?

If I do end up having to type it, is there some way that the cheat can be incorporated into lilo.conf so it is done automatically?
