Wardriving 101

Is that for real? So hard not to laugh while watching this at work.

On another note, for my wireless security research paper I've gotten 2077 wireless networks with NetStumbler. 888 of them are unencrypted, and 770 of them are default SSID. Kinda funny that most people don't even change the SSID. I wonder how many people connect to the wrong "Linksys" while at home.

Is it for real?? Yea, people "wardrive" all the time. Its not illegal as long as you don't connect.

I remember when I bought my first laptop. I was so ignorant...that I bought a laptop just to get "free" internet anywhere I was in the world. I actually thought I connected to some satellite in space to get my signal...and this service was free just because I bought a laptop. And apparently I'm not the only person who fell for this theory.

To answer your question about how many people connect to the wrong Linksys while their at home...I'd imagine its a frequent happening. Why?? Because when I first started playing with my first laptop,...I connected to my default Linksys AP...and then later on that night I saw another Linksys AP when I rebooted, and yes I connected to it instead of mine. Not intentionally, but because it was an open AP (like mine at the time) and Windows picked it because its power level was stronger than mine. (I was outside in my backyard having a cold brewski.)

So yea..I think it happens quite frequently.

I know wardriving is real, I do it quite often. I just think it's funny how they presented it on this new station. They're saying that wardriving is basically the act of "hacking" into a open network to send spam, download stuff, and look at your computer files! Time to break out the foil hats.

Sorry ivanho. I wasn't sure if you were being serious or not.

But yea, news stations like to portray wardriving as being illegal most of the time.

I fail to see what's funny about this.

People with malicious intent don't just go wardriving and bask in the amount of ap's they've found. They said specifically that its possible to do many things to your home computer with an open access point. Not that everyone who wardrives has malicious intent. Where I'm from there isn't much point in wardriving anyways but then again I live in one of the largest cities in the US.

Some cellular companies offer wireless internet access, although it isn't free it is available anywhere your cellular phone gets reception and has a decent bandwith rate. I'm not certain whether they use satellites all the time but it's close. Only one I've actually seen and used was from sprint and I did a bandwith test right away and had decent up and down rates. I forget the exact numbers now.

People wardrive usually just to see what other AP's there are around them and to get an Idea of how secure others around them are. I do it just to map them and see what unique and unusual names they name their networks. I also do it to see how far my alfa and 2 WATT amps can see, and how far I can go to access my AP.
