Start with typing "fixvesa" before issuing the "startx" command to see if you can get a gui. If that does not work include your lscpi -nnv output to see what we are working with as far as video card.
Hello Everybody,
This is my first post, and I'm sorry to have to make a first impression with such a stupid question, but how do I get a user interface for BackTrack 4?
I just downloaded BT4 (Final Release) and installed it to my USB device with Unetbootin. When I start BT4, I choose the "default" boot method and after it boots up, I'm logged in as root and I'm presented with the command prompt. I can navigate using the command prompt, but as I'm completely new to Linux systems, it would be very handy to have a GUI right now while I'm learning.
I also read somewhere that I should try a 'startx' command. However, it gave me an error message saying that the "Screens cannot be found. Giving up." I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I trust you guys would know.
So as to reformulate my question, how would I bring up a GUI from the shell?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cbeppe.

I may have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth but it does not mean I like to be spoon fed.
Thank you very much for that, Skinnypuppy. The first one worked perfectly.
The only problem I have now is that I do not have any internet connection. Wicd is unable to find any connections (even though there are). Are there any fixes for that? Anyone else who has had a similar problem maybe?
Thanks for your help so far![]()
There is a guide for that as well. We highly encourage our users to search before making posts. This will save you and everyone else time. First thing would be to look here at the stickied threads and or the website faq.
