    Exclamation How to "Restore All Of Your Sessions" on BT3 like it did in BT2!!

    Hello to all.

    I really hope I'm not the only one who was facing this problem, and that this work of mine will help out at least 1 other person faced with a similar situation.

    I wasn't sure if this was a bug or not (I need muts or another admin to clarify this please) but I was coming up empty handed getting all my windows, shells, Kwrite, Firefox,etc.... (basically anything that you open up) to "reload" on boot-up. You guys know what I mean?? Like back in bt2....say you open a shell and make it have 5 tabs, you open Kwrite and firefox up and all the sudden you have to leave and you don't want to leave your laptop on, so you logoff and power down your Laptop. Then, you return and power bt2 back on, and EVERYTHING is back up and running in the EXACT same position as where you left it at when you logged off the last time.

    Well,..in bt3, this does not happen. If you logoff at anytime and have ANY windows or apps up and running and you log off,...your session is NOT saved!! What happened?? Where is all the work I had gone to?? Wheres my Kwrite opened up to where I was working on my dictionaries at?? Wheres my shell window with all my tabs at?? ITS ALL GONE!!!

    Don't worry! And don't panic!! I have solved this "bug" / "mystery".

    After long and intensive trial and error. ...I managed to make my bt3 work like my bt2. Remember when I was telling some of you, (balding_parrot,pureh@te,etc) that I was having trouble getting my screens or "sessions" back after I rebooted?? Like when you open 4 tabs in a shell and have Firefox up..and maybe you were looking at a file all at the same time...then you leave those windows open and reboot...and when you log back in...their gone!! But in bt2 they "reloaded" EXACTLY the way you left them??

    Wanna know what the problem was?? Wanna know how to "fix" this "bug"?? Heres how....

    -=The E-Z way=-

    First off, make sure you have show hidden files and folders checked!!!

    It was SSSSooooo simple...yet for a Linux novice like myself, it was somewhat of a difficult and tedious task.

    I moved folder after folder, compared them to bt2's files and folders, ..reboot after reboot (thats why you haven't seen me on the forums for the last few days..lol )

    The problem was with a little file called ksmserverrc located in ...

    /root/.kde/share/config
    thats .kde

    not kde

    go to that file and open it up with Kwrite or whatever and go to the line called

    loginMode=default

    change that to...guess what

    Thats right!!! You change it to......

    loginMode=restorePreviousLogout

    Now save and exit AND REBOOT NOW!!!!

    So simple!!!!

    AFTER REBOOT>> Go ahead and open up a couple of shell windows, a text document...and leave it all up. Now logoff and reboot, and tell me what you see now??
    For now on, when you logoff and you have multiple windows opened at the same time...they'll be "automagically" restored to the SAME EXACT position, and whatever you had opened before you logged off will be right there waiting on you!!

    Cool huh??

    Another mystery solve by -=Xploitz=-

    lol

    Thanks to balding_parrot and pureh@te for your help with this. I figured you'd guys would probably be interested in knowing the fix and I wanted to tell you thanks for the good advice and for offering me help tracking down this "bug".

    I'm also going to post this in the BT3 bugs section just in case. Like I said earlier,..I don't know if it is a bug or if it was intentional to have it read

    loginMode=default

    or not, so until someone on the staff or development team can confirm this as a "bug" or that its suppose to be like this...I'm going to post this in the BT3 bugs section as well. Sorry for the double post, but when its confirmed either way I'll remove it from the BT3 Bugs forum or from this forum. Heres the link to the other post.>>>

    Bug?? Sessions not saved / restoring -=Fixed=-

    Very handy. Wonder if you know how to solve the bug on this forum...i go to the toilet for a couple of minutes and as soon as I come back i need to re-log-in again Every damn time. lol. Maybe I should do some auditing on this site to find the bug - only joking lol.

    Nice work.

    I didn't realise how 'anal' one can become with posting tutorials, I just posted one and all I now see is so many viewers and no damn comments. Makes you see it from another perspective lol.

    All the best and keep up the informative and useful tuts.

    peace

    oh oh, followed that guide word perfect, everything went smooth until i tried ot reboot.

    On startup i got a grey box with no text in it, just an 'OK'

    upon clicking ok i got

    Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.
    everything was working fine before i tried this mod..'

    I was then booted to login, i logged in and edited ksmserverrc back to normal from the prompt, rebooted. and bang, same error... gonna wipe changes partition and start again:P

    I've checked to see if the changes wrote, and the loginMode=default so dunno what else this mod did.

    I'm running a 8gb Usb stick with a ext2 partition for save changes.

    Thanks!

    About your re-logon thing. Heres the fix, its no bug though. When you first log on, theres a checkbox called "Remember Me?"

    Check that, and all your toilet / re-login issues will be solved. Feel comfortable to spend a couple more minutes on the john now knowing that you won't be logged off anymore.

    UUhh oh!! Thats not good!!

    I did this on a HDD install. I don't know if that really matters or not though??? This mod worked fine on both mine and my wifes laptops...but then again they were both were HDD installs. But having an usb stick with changes on it shouldn't matter!! That file I had you to edit should only effect your "sessions" and nothing else. And when you changed it back to the original wording..it should have "went back to the way it was".

    Can anyone else confirm this for me please who has a USB with changes on it try this please??

    I'm really very, VERY sorry that your going to have to reformat your changes partition. I figured that this would work on all types of installs.

    Cool. Thanks pureh@te. I look forward to your report.

    If you get the same results, I'll need to edit my title to say for HDD installs only.

    Something must have went screwy the first time, re-did the above steps and not getting that error anymore. However when booting up I'm not getting the windows i had open previously in the same place/settings. For example, i opened a shell with 3 tabs, added txt to each of them. on poweroff then turning back on again the shell just opens as normal without any changes.

    I've checked the ksmserverrc is still showing
    loginMode=restorePreviousLogout
    strange i think...

    gonna have a play will let ya know what(if) i figure out
