    Default Help : Flickering Screen

    Hello Friends!

I was using BT4 in VMWare 7. It was working very fine.
But when I thought of installing BT4 on HDD I was unable to get into GUI mode.

I tried booting with all the options , all failed, giving me flickering screen in which I could do nothing.

Though Safe Mode Graphic Boot worked with less flickering screen I was able to start terminal only and nothing else.

BT4 is trying to use 1280x1024 screen resolution with refresh rate 60Hz.
And as far as I know my monitor works best with 1024x768 resolution and refresh rate 85Hz.
[Source: Monitor's Manual and Experience while using Win XP ].

My Monitor Supports these Display Modes (Resolution) :
Display Mode Horizontal Freq(kHz) Vertical Freq(Hz)
    1.VESA 1280x1024 63.98 60 (Max)
    2.VESA 1024x768 68.677 85 (Recommended)
    3.VESA 800x600 53.68 85

So I want to know how can I get around this flickering screen.
Which files to edit? What and how to edit?

    Thanking You in advance.

Try starting with your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Manpages and a little googling will get you some info on editing this file.

    Thanx xX_Spiidey_Xx

This link helped me a lot : Howto: change resolution/refresh rate in Xorg

So here's my solution for flickering screen:

1.First I looked at my Xorg's log file to check which screen resolutions are detected.
    PATH for log file:
    Code:
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log
I found that screen resolution 1024x768 is supported at refresh rate 85
Also the monitor name was detected wrong (Mine is LG FLATRON E700SH and it showed T710BH)
But that was not an issue....

2.Now examining the configuration file of Xorg which is present in
    Code:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I changed the Monitor Identifier to T710BH
and I added modeline in Monitor section.
To generate a modeline I used command line utility "cvt"
    Type in terminal:
    Code:
    cvt 1024 768 85
Then I copied the output to Monitor section of xorg.conf.

    My xorg.conf file:
    Code:
    Section "Monitor"
            Identifier "T710BH"
            HorizSync 30-71
            VertRefresh 50-160
    # 1024x768 84.89 Hz (CVT 0.79M3) hsync: 68.68 kHz; pclk: 94.50 MHz
    Modeline "1024x768_85.00" 94.50 1024 1096 1200 1376 768 771 775 809 -hsync +vsync
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    # Here I removed Monitor because it was giving me error
            Identifier "Configured Video Device"
            Driver "vesa"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
            Identifier "Default Screen"
            Device "Configured Video Device"
            Monitor "T710BH"
            DefaultDepth 16
            SubSection "Display"
                    Depth 16
                    Modes "1024x768_85.00"
            EndSubSection
    EndSection
    __________________________________________________ ____________________________________

So after saving this file I started X through terminal by typing startx

And Now BackTrack 4 is rocking................
