Looks to me like you have a windows xp driver as opposed to a linux driver?
first I will assume since you have a laptop that the sound card is installed if not then that would be the first step to install it.
now most linux distros have sound card drivers built into them
you can look here to see what modules you have:
/lib/modules/2.6.20-BT-PwnSauce-NOSMP/kernel
in most cases those that are provided are sufficient to have sound (mine worked out of the box).
also check dmesg
looking for something to do with your sound card itself
maybe like this:
Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
sb: Creative SB AWE64 PnP detected
sb: ISAPnP reports 'Creative SB AWE64 PnP' at i/o 0x220, irq 5, dma 1, 5
SB 4.16 detected OK (220)
sb: 1 Soundblaster PnP card(s) found.
i would recommend that you post your dmesg here so that others may look at it if you are lost.
also there is another way to try to see if your sound card is working by looking at
K > system > settings > sound and multimedia>soundsystems to see if that helps
