    Default desktop not showing up

hi there, i recently downloaded and burned backtrack3 on my cd rom.

the problem i have is that the linux desktop doesnt show up, i need to enter user and password, and it stays in the command prompt. i tried the startx and xconf command(the program tells me to do that). but no desktop shows up

on the pc of my father the desktop loads after entering user and password.

andy1 knows what im doing wrong?

    thanks in advance

Yeah you are using and unsupported and out dated distro. This is the home of back track 4 final.
No other OS is supported. So upgrade.

I have the same problem with bt4, tested on i7 and on PentM, is it intended that I start the gui manually?

    Yes it is.
Capitalisation is important. It's the difference between "Helping your brother Jack off a horse" and "Helping your brother jack off a horse".

... Yes, you have to type in "startx" and press enter.
