What VMWare version are you using?
There is a VMWare 32-bit version of Backtrack with GNOME. I have used the GNOME 64-bit .iso version in VMWare Fusion for more than a year now. I know there has been a problem with accelerate 3D graphics switched on with Ubuntu.
The VMware version does not need to be installed, just open it in VMware.

You are trying to import an archive as an ISO file, it's only natural that it's not going to work. I suggest you document yourself how to open virtual machines in VMware or use VMDK files![]()
