I did this Friday. I put an add in Mesquites local newspaper. And BTW..I hate getting flyers on my windshield as well!!

Doorknob hangers are a better idea than the windshield as you're not at another's business. But if you're going to do this, you should check with your local township to see if it requires a permit. Sometimes you can get lucky and they'll say you don't need a permit, but just to let them know when you're doing it so they don't get calls of a suspicious person in the neighborhood trying doorknobs.

Another good place is the bulletin boards in Grocery Stores. Many stores have places where you post little ads. Churches are good too. Most Catholic churches have a big pre-printed bulletin they give out every sunday with adspace on the back. I don't think it costs much to get onto there.

Local libraries sometimes have bulletin boards for local advertisements, and then there's of course a website. Stay away from the Yellow pages, they're really expensive, and it can be really tough to see a ROI on a yellow page ad.

When you do get calls from customers, ask them where you got the number, so you can keep track of what works.
Yea, I learned the inside the mailbox thing the hard way. On my first day of getting my flyers printed, I went down my street and put them inside the mailboxes..well, to make a long story short, about 3 minutes later I get this call from my friend and I answered the phone.." Cutting Edge P.C. Repair, this is James. How may I be of service to you?"...and he didn't realize it was me cause it was my cell phone, and he doesn't have my cell phone..just my home phone number lol...well anyways..he proceeded to curse, yell, and physically threaten me about putting my flyer in his mailbox. ( I had NO CLUE that that was illegal either.) He said I was tampering with federal mail..etc. And then it clicked on me that..OOOpps!!! Hes right! It didn't even cross my mind that what I was doing was illegal. Good thing that I only did that to that one street. But anyways..He said that if he ever saw my SUV near his property again he was going to shove my flyer down my throat. I played it off so he wouldn't know it was me...hung up the phone, and went straight to his house. He came running up to me and said " damn dude! I though you were that pc repair dork coming back to my mailbox again!" . Right then, he looked down and saw my flyers, and business cards in the front seat and started to laugh. I said to him "You still wanna shove my flyers down my throat??" ..he laughed and invited me into his home and gave me a beer and asked me to take a look at his PC.

    Now thats a funny story!!

BTW. I have hit every grocery store, laundry mat, church and I even put up a couple of signs on the corner of intersections (I hope the signs aren't illegal) And I even did the local newspaper thing. And I always ask where they got my flyer from so Ill know what region is making me the money, so I'll know how to better advertise and revamp my strategy.

All in all, its going better than expected, and I'm taking all 4 A+ certs next month.

So it would effectively be the same thing if I were to stand in front of your house and hand out flyers advertising my own competing business at lower rates all the while telling everyone within earshot what a crappy business you run for whatever price you charge.

There may not be a state law, as has been conceded already. But there could be local laws in the town where you live, it would be a good idea to check them if you're going to do this again. Normally local laws like that are just a fine for the first time and considered Misdemeanors.
Ok, I can understand that. Seems that I need to reevaluate my methodologies and go talk to the City of Mesquite and get some verification.

Is it ok then if I posted my business card and flyer here? Not for sales reasons, but because I want opinions on them, and I need help getting rid of a LOT of wording on my flyers. I think I went overboard on the technical details.. And maybe some help with its design. I'm not happy with my flyer..but my business card I am.

See, that's where you're wrong. The crime is arrestable, not whether you stay or not. In most places, the norm is to state something to the effect of, 'if you do not leave now, you will be arrested.' That way the intent of the person is clearly known, Before that, crime has been committed, and is being committed in front of the officer, but the intent may not be clear to a court. Once you spell it out and they still don't leave, then their intent is clear.

The reason I said, "erroneous opinion" is because you did offer an opinion about whether you broke the law:

Fair enough, but I would suggest that you don't act like you know what you're talking about in regards to criminal law if if you haven't ever studied criminal law.

In reading further in this thread you seem to making some classic mistakes. I started out in a similar position, but I carefully researched all of this for months before starting my business and avoided making these mistakes. Let me offer you some advice:

First: TALK TO A BUSINESS LAWYER. You obviously don't have any clear idea on what is legal and what isn't. Both your actions at Best Buy and with the US mailboxes show that. A lawyer should be able to tell you about such things, as well as give you advice regarding licensing (e.g. Is a home run business legal in your area? It may or may not be, but you don't want to loose the house if the local town sues you for non-compliant use.)

Then write a business plan. Get a book on writing a business plan. Get four or five. Read each one, and then FOLLOW THEM. You need to ask hard questions, and you should be looking at actual costs for doing business, (including heat, electric, Internet access, gas for trips to/from client's places, etc.) and not what you think is 'nice' or 'fair' to charge. There is a reason that places like Geek Squad charges a high rate, and I bet if you look at costs and approach this as a business, you will, too.

Next, get insurance and licenses. Insurance should cover lose of your own equipment plus cover liability of any clients coming to your house, and accidental losses of client's hardware (like you drop a PC and break it.) Again, you don't want to loose the house in a lawsuit because a client tripped on the front walk and broke their back. Licenses make you legal.

For what it's worth, I charge more than Geek Squad, in part because I'm very, very good, and in part because of what other things cost me to be in business. I also learned that home-PC clients aren't worth it for a number of reasons. Geek Squad is welcome to them.

    Good luck.

Home clients are a PITA, to be sure, they expect the world for a minimum of cost. But on the other hand, you can gain some valuable troubleshooting experience for some of the stranger issues you might run across. But it's generally not going to get you anywhere in regards learning advanced Networking and administration stuff.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

See, it has already been very well established he doesn't know what the laws are, and self-admittedly at that. This kind of comment is what keeps unnessesary arguments from coming to a grinding halt. He understands he was breaking the law (in the case of the mailboxes), he understands the concept of trespass when told to leave and not doing so, and he has conceded to talk to his city council on the applicable laws. EOF.....

Gee, I thought it was finished, or are you attempting to throw gasoline on the embers?

As far as "unnecessary" goes, that's clearly a matter of opinion. Unprofessional actions can reflect badly on everyone in this type of business, and illegal actions can be even worse. Both should be stamped out with all due vigor by all responsible people in the profession.
