    thanks for reply!

    @snafu777:
this was one of the firsts guide I used but for me it was not working.

20 minutes ago I found a page where is a detailed description to install a different kernel - which I tried see SEE HERE
I am using now the Linux bt 3.2.15-030215-generic kernel. Actually I am not sure if that was a good idea.

After installing this kernel ---> i915 is loaded without any problems!
Now I am able to change the resolution, second screen is in extended mode (YESSSSS!) Hotplug D-Sub (VGA) is working (YESSSSS! again) - HDMI output (third YESSSSS!) only a sound problem on HDMI but ok

Battery cosume gives me appr. 3 hours - but I think this is normal regarding the optimus stuff.

For me is this solution a good working one!

But I will play around with the Backtrack kernel and try to install the i965 driver - hopefully with success - will report.

just some confusion about glxspheres - see below - please give me more information about that behavior.
    Code:

Would you please post the xserver-xorg-video-intel version?...
    aptitude show xserver-xorg-video-intel

and also please aptitude search i965

    Thanks.

sure will post it when I am @home

    offtopic:
    another 2 questions:
is there an overview about the modification in Backtrack kernel 3.2.6?
is it possible to apply the modification from Backtrack kernel to 3.2.15?

    thanks

The i8xx, i9xx come included in the xserver-xorg-video-intel.

According to what I read in the links I posted ( http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_HD_Graphics) and I want to quote:
"The Intel HD Graphics (sometimes also called GMA HD) is the Graphics Memory Accelerator (GMA) integrated in the Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5 and selected Intel Core i7 processors. Sandy Bridge architecture processors use HD Graphics 2000 or HD Graphics 3000 model, Ivy Bridge architecture processors use HD Graphics 2500 or HD Graphics 4000. "

Some people with Intel Graphics Second Generation are fixing their problems with the BT5 kernel and the i915 driver, as shown by WepWapWee.

Intel Third Gen which I see is the HD4000 (Ivey Bridge) and is not working well with the i915 module. In your case you upgraded kernel. It fixed it, so I'm seeing that Ivy Bridges HD graphics or at least the HD4000 needs a different kernel to be able to use i915..Perhaps you wont have 100% operation, but most of it.

Now the i965, is a support for the GMA HD, and what keeps my attention is the fact that upgrading kernel without changing the version of xserver-xorg-video-intel helped to make the i915 handle the card...

All seems to point towards xserver-xorg-video-intel under the actual BT5 kernel is not able to handle Ivy Bridge HD4000 Intel Cards (Third Gen).

I want to think that in case you do not want to upgrade kernel, you have the i965-vap module to work out the issue as another option.

Any comment on this matter will be very helpfull to all comunity and people who have that video card.

And tr00n3r, if your fix keeps workig, it sure is a great contribution....

    Thanks for clarification, maverik35.

I would like to use the Backtrack Kernel more than any other cause it comes with the distri and this has imo a good reason. It's well tested with all provided tools. So it makes sense for me to use the kernel provided by the devs.

But hopefully the developers will fix the behavior with Intel HD 4000 and Backtrack in further releases. I don't know the release circle from Backtrack and I am also not a dev - more the TRY-AND-ERROR-USER to get more expirience with Linux.
But I think we have a good documented attitude for fixing it. Cause there are lots of others out there and Intel will not stop producing CPU's included graphics card - unfortunately

When I was try to install the i965-vap module lots, really lots of dependencies were missing. Will post the output when @home. And it is really hard work to take over all the dependencies from http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/ . But I am also afraid of adding that repository to get the graphics working.

What do you think? Should I give it a try with adding it?

I am glad to help others so I will comment anything I will find out.
Will come back with my output in appr. 1 hour.

Hey buddy could you please tell from where you downloaded required files for kernel 3.2.15 and how you installed it?

    Sure:
!DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any damage, errors or failures on your system!

Starting the sentence from me previous post with "20 minutes ago ..." there is a link marked with SEE HERE - that is the correct way HOW-TO-INSTALL! Keep in mind that the correct order is very important!

!!!I didn't modified these provided files or manipulated them!!!

64bit ONLY! for 32bit please pick it directly from Original URL.
I just uploaded the files for upgradin kernel into my dropbox also numbered in correct order for installation you can easy download it.

    Kernel 3.2.15:
    Original URL: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa....2.15-precise/
    Dropbox Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wsijolxy4zdg7yy/htFcORfbJp

after that it's pretty simple - file named 4_update-grub is only there that you won't forget to update the bootloader as the last step!

when downloaded unzip it to a folder of your choice. open a terminal and type:
    Code:
    root@bt:~# dpkg -i 1_linux-headers-3.2.15-030215_3.2.15-030215.201204131303_all.deb
    .
    .
    wait until finshed
    root@bt:~# dpkg -i 2_linux-headers-3.2.15-030215-generic_3.2.15-030215.201204131303_amd64.deb
    .
    .
    wait until finshed
    root@bt:~# dpkg -i 3_linux-image-3.2.15-030215-generic_3.2.15-030215.201204131303_amd64.deb
    .
    .
    wait until finshed
    root@bt:~# update-grub
    root@bt:~# reboot
reboot and be sure that you have the boot options i915.modeset=1 // OPTIMUS i915.modeset=1 nomodeset enabled- enjoy!

    my default boot options are
    i915.modeset=1 nomodeset i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.semaphores=1 pcie_aspm=force
i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.semaphores=1 pcie_aspm=force is set for powersaving provided from HERE

Do not update to newer than that as you would have to update glibc6 and that would broke the applications.

Hy guys, I have Dell INSPIRON 5521
Have Core i3-3217U, HD4000 (Ivey Bridge) with ati radeon HD 7670M

I upgraded to kernel to 3.2.15 but when i STARTX i got black screen with [OK]
standing in upper right corner, just hang like that!

    I managed: aptitude show xserver-xorg-video-intel
    and i saw this line:
This package provides the driver for the Intel i8xx an i9xx family of chipset, inluding i810, i815, i830,
    i845, i855, i865, i915, i945 and i965

shouldn't this last one (i965) solve the problem???

    Hi,

did you installed the xserver-xorg-video-intel drivers?
what does your /etc/default/grub look like? any kernel options for startup (i915.modeset=1 nomodeset i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.semaphores=1 pcie_aspm=force)?

    to check:
    Code:
    apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel
should give you the output which version you have installed and from which repo

if it is not installed - add ppa:glasen/intel-driver

    1) apt-get install python-software-properties
    2) add-apt-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
    3) apt-get update
    4) apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

if that is not working try as step 4 apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade

another solution would be to use the new Kali Linux - for me video was working out of the box
