Default problem with my new alfa 500mw usb

i have been trying to set its encryption up and uh its not letting me ive tried both gui's and the command prompt its returning the following errors

    iwconfig wlan0 enc 1bd2fe7259
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.

    iwconfig shows the following

    wlan0 802.11b/g ESSID:"Linksy"
    Mode:Managed Channel=8 Access Point: 00:18:4D:7C:CD:1E
    Bit Rate=-67.296 kb/s Tx-Power=25 dBm
    Retryn Fragment thrff
    Encryption keyff
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

the essid was supposed to be Linksys but it came out like that as well
im stumped so far its worked fine with monitor mode in airodump and kismet its even properly cracked a wep key. i cracked an old linksys router i have worked great got the proper key and everything so im trying to connect and um yeah its not letting me set the key. any help would be appreciated.

also does it matter if im also connected by ethernet?

    have you try to :
    ifconfig wlan0 down
    unload driver
    dhcpcd -k wlan0
    rm -f -r /etc/dhcpc/*
    reload driver
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    iwconfig ..................

that's the way i do when i got some strange errors....maybe it will help you.......

I have no idea. im rather new to this configuration stuff. where would i check that? it is my understanding that quite a few people on this forum use the exact same wifi card im using so they should know. however i have searched the forums here multiple times and no one has posted about this problem.
what is wierd is can do everything else just fine. Kismet works the whole aircrack suite works. it just wont let me set up WEP. i havnt tried connecting to an unsecure network yet. but i will try that probably later on today.

ok here is the output from trying to connect to an insecure network no dice...

    bt ~ # iwconfig wlan0 essid wesmagyartestnet
    bt ~ # iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    wlan0 802.11b/g ESSID:"wesmagyartestne"
    Mode:Managed Channel=1 Access Point: Not-Associated
    Bit Rate=11 Mb/s Tx-Power=25 dBm
    Retryn Fragment thrff
    Encryption keyff
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

    bt ~ # iwlist scan
    lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

    eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Operation not permitted

    bt ~ # dhcpcd wlan0

then it just hangs. i know the network is there i am connected to it on my windows laptop. so yeah no idea. it is completly insecure no wep or anything. so add to the list of bugs it wont let me set the full essid it cuts off the last letter ive tried it with the network name in quotes and everything... its there. grrr this is annoying as hell.
