In airodump-ng....
You have to either wait untill a client connects..or deauth a connected client.
Kismet....
Not sure how Kismet works behind the scenes to "de-cloak" a hidden ESSID...but I'm sure someone can explain it for me.

What you mean deauthing doesn't work?? It always works!!
aireplay-ng -0 10 should do it.
If you prefer -4 ...use it. Every router responds diffrently with each attack. You really need to master all 4 aireplay WEP attacks..-2....-3.......-4......-5
The more options you have..the better cracker you will become..and the easier it will get.
