Question This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU

    Hi,

I'm trying to install Backtrack 5 (R3) on virutalbox, but every time I try to enter text mode it starts loading somethings and then eventually gives me this message:

"This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU.
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU."

    Here are my system specs:
    System
    Model: Windows 7 RTM v2.0-x64
    Processor pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz 2.50GHz
    Installed memory (RAM): 2,00 GB
    system type: 64-bit Operating System.

I used these two backtrack os'ses to try to install it but i got the same message on both,
    BT5R3-GNOME-64.iso
    BT5R3-KDE-64.iso
(Don't know the difference between GNOME and KDE tho.)

If anyone could explain to me what i'm doing wrong or how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

I do not see anything wrong. I would strongly suggest to install 32bit in VM's athough you have a 64bit processor. I have 2 VM with 32bit distros and run just fine.

You might want to know if PC or Laptop has support for Virtualization in BIOS and enable it if aplicable.. Search in your BIOS for Virtualization.

64bits Host can install 32 and 64 bit guests.

32 bit host can install 32 and 64bit guests (Not recommended due to excess of overhead).

The VM have software and hardware Virtualization. in 32 bit VM guests, softwtare Virtualization takes place, but in 64 bit VM it requires hardware and software Virtualization.

So again, you might want to check you bios for enabling the Virtualization feature.

    Luck.
