Default JTR custom char set question - non noob question

    Hey guys,

I've been reading the documentation for JTR and I used to use this program a few years ago. Now it seems like it's missing some of the features it had.

I am pretty sure you used to be able to specify your char set from the command line.

I read that now you can generate a custom character set file based on previously cracked passwords. But that is all I can find. That is useless if you have no cracked data.

It seems like you are stuck with the default character sets of Alpha, ALL, Digits, Alnum, lanman, etc...

For example how could I generate a char file that uses only lowercase letters and !@$ ?

I swear I remember that I used to be able to use something like

    --charset =[abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz!@#$]

I cannot find anywhere in the docs or in google where you can do this.
Mind you, it has been a few years since I used this prog.

Please advise if I need to up my prescription.

    Default expansion

That was not meant to be so terse.

I was interested in John the Ripper quite a while ago whilst looking at parallelisation with researchers at San Diego. We ran it on some quite large machines.

At that time we found the rulesets quiet enough. It really is quite old now!

We used perl or a simple unix tr for any upchanges but that seemed trivial. Maybe I don't understand your problem enough to help with a reply so if you would expand I will think again.

    Default

Is that not simply rules to mangle your wordlist?

    If I missunderstood I'm sorry.

I would like to use incremental mode with a custom char set. IE. lowercase and 3 special chars.
