I recently upgraded my distro, installed amarok and gxine to watch videos on my BT 5R. For some reason, the videos play but there's no sound and I cant lip read for my life. I tried other formats such as mp3 as well - no dice. After doing some research online I changed the start up application (sound manager) from "/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1" to "start-pulseaudio-x11.," It didnt work! Every time I click on preferences a msgbox appears - "waiting for sound system to respond"image1.jpeg. I tried wireless logitech headphones and speakers but still hear deadair! I think it might be a codec or configuration issue. any ideas?

well, my advice is that first, before doing things taken from here and there that might get you confused, you try to see what is going on:
What type of sound card do you have?
What driver is kernel using?
Is the card supported by driver?
Is there a driver from vendor in case the open driver is not working correctly?
And then you start to work around that info..Don't just go doing things that will not help...
Try that and see what is going on..
Luck.
cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---

how can I check the driver the kernel's using?
lspci | grep -i sound
didn't return any results.
on the other hand...

Kernel driver in use: cx23885
Kernel modules: cx23885
so it looks like its cx23885...
Ok..let's see, I've been reading about that driver and it seems to have problems with kernels <3.5...So from here, we can do 2 things:
1. Look for the /run folder, back it up, then erase it and reboot...If something goes wrong, we can fix it renaming the backup as "run"...
2. Used pulseaudio as stated by Flost. I do not know if it will work..
Try it and see...If I were you, I would go with the option 1 and then try the 2..But you have 2 options.
I have the same problem...everything is working fine in backtrack 5 R3 except the sound driver. I have installed jockey to auto find the hardware but still it is not giving me the sound driver. when i type the command "lshw" it is showing me Hudson Azalia Controller sound driver. I am not able to listen the video lectures. Please help me. thank you..
Ok. I searched my entire HD for a run folder. It doesn't exist. How can I install and switch to "pulseaudio" instead of the default installation?
the only run folder on my system is int the var directory. I cannot erase it using nautilus as apps in the directory are currently running. I can switch back the cmdline forcefully kill the processes/apps in memory and the erase it. But I don't see how that will fix my audio issue? It seems like this can be fixed with either an upgrade or a config tweak...any other suggestions? I can I switch to regular pulse audio?
