There is an error in the above tutorial I wanted to point out for everyone who may be struggling with it at this point. You can't continue with this tutorial unless you enter in the correct command.
Can anyone spot the error??
The error is the commandIt SHOULD BECode:nessus-makecert
cd /opt/nessus/sbin
nessus-mkcert
nessus-add-first-user
nessusd -D
Editing it myself right now since he's not online, to reflect the correct command.
I hope you didn't mind me doing that elazar.![]()

Well, to be completely honest...this was my first time to use your tutorial. I was stuck here for about 30 minutes at this error. So I really couldn't go any further than this.I was so anxious to get past this point that I PM'd purehate about it...and as he was PM-ing me basically the same thing in response..I had already figured it out by reading the wiki (captains post) and the solution was there. So I PM'd purehate the solution..and as soon as I sent it..his response was already in my inbox.

...everything works fine ! Many thanks :-) :-)
Chris
I have a few questions about installing nessus on backtrack. I'm new to backtrack and slackware based stuff. I've done a little with Fedora at school and I have gentoo installed at home.
1. Are the instructions at the beginning of the thread for installing nessus to Backtrack once it's installed on a hard drive or for putting it in the ISO?
2. Is that rpm2tgz command only in slackware based Distros?
3. I was searching on this site and found site called irongeek.com that showed how to add modules to Backtrack from windows with a program called myslax. I found an RPM module that says it would allow you to use RPMs. Would that work in this case?
I'm just trying to understand how to do this. Nessus looks like a nice program and having it on a liveCD could be usefull. So far, my attempts at a linux install of nessus have been less than successfull. I got the windows version to work okay. It just buggs me when I can't get something to work the way I want it to.
Answers-
1. yes the instructions are for a hard drive install but at the end you will see the instructions on how to create a module.
2. the rpm2tgz command is a little piece of software that i imagine can go on any number of distros
3. My slax will not work on bt2 final. the iron geek video worked with a earlier release. If you check the backtrack wiki there is plenty of info on creating a module and adding it to the .iso to create a custom taylor made cd.
Hope that helps![]()
The Nessus Network Auditing book is now in its second edition (Nov 2007)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nessus-Netwo...4806007&sr=8-1
Did you look at that?
All I have to say is thank you, I have had to reload BT2 onto my laptop a few times (due to my own stupidity) and I have always had problems with installing Nessus and getting it to work the 1st time, after reading this one I got it going in under 10 min with no issues. So thanks again.
