Wow, lots of people in their 30's going back to school. Cool, I'm not alone.

College has its pros/cons regarding IT degrees. I quickly came to the conclusion that most professors do not stay up to date within this rapidly changing field. Most of my professors have been teaching the same courses for more than a decade and have a thorough understanding of core concepts, but they don't spend any time staying current. My first Networking professor was amazed to learn that WEP was crackable. My DB professor never even heard of SQL Injection.

Book smarts will only get you so far, real world experience will get you the rest of the way.

    Good luck to you -=Xploitz=-

This is true for me too but school is great for me because it is filling in all the fundamental areas that I missed . the reality is you must have a combination of real world experience and a degree.

Exactly why I'm attending. I need the fundamentals and basic concepts. Ok..so I can hack and crack with BT2..woop-t-freaking do. (No offence @ BT) But I don't want to be a freaking button pusher..you know? I want to understand the physics behind what i do better than I currently do. I can code my own pearl or python..I can only use the tools on BT2. Thats why I said woop-t-freaking-do. A monkey can use BT2 if he wanted to. I wan't to know it all....EVERYTHING about penetration testing..how and why wifi works the way it does..algorithms...protocol, the WHOLE 9 yards! I want to be the "Ultimate Ethical Hacker". And get paid a shit load of money from the government by being on their l33t team.

    Default College deactivated my Degree!!

Keep in mind school starts THIS MONDAY!!!

So I got a call from my local community college...,

And I had to go down to the college ASAP. There was a problem with my financial aide. They told me my college dropped my Assoc. Degree in Administrative Networking yesterday...AND THEIR NOT GOING TO RE-ACTIVATE IT>>>>EVER!!! So i had to go register for a regular old Assoc. in Applied Science (general). Looks like I got the royal ****ing. Purehate mentioned Devry..so i called them up and i got an APT. with them Saturday. I might just take my core classes at my community college and transfer them to Devry's BS degree in Network Systems Administrator class. Looks like my only option ATM..Boy am I pissed. No other college in the Dallas area offers that GD course! Assholes!!

Ok..I'm done ranting. And I apologize for my mouth.

    Went there today. $43,000 USD!!!

$20,000 USD in government loads....$7,500 USD in personal loan from Sallie Mae...and the other $16,000 USD in Pell Grants.

So for now, I found that Richland Community College, closest of Dallas colleges to me, (Associated with Eastfield Community College where I'm registered at) offers.....
COMPUTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY -- NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR AND SUPPORT

(Associate in Applied Sciences Degree, Tech Prep Enhanced Skills Certificate)

Specialization tracks are offered only at the colleges listed below:
    • Brookhaven: Unix/Linux, Microsoft
    • Cedar Valley: Microsoft
    • El Centro: Convergence Technology, CCNA, CCNP, System i, Microsoft
    • Mountain View: Convergence Technology, CCNA, CCNP, Microsoft
    • North Lake: Convergence Technology, CCNA, CCNP, Unix/Linux, Microsoft
    • Richland Community College: CCNA, CCNP, Solaris, Microsoft
All of these colleges are part of Dallas county community college district. So my question is.....is Richland the best bet for specializing in Wireless Penetration Testing????

I'm guessing that North Lake is.

Im currently going for "Network administration and security specialist" Which is essentially MCSE with more security oriented tests and my ellectives will be security oriented aswel. Oh, and CCNA is part of the course. But yea, these fast track one year diploma colleges are expensive. Im dishing out like 16000 for tuition, 2000 for books, and like 1500 for cert tests... Hopefully when I get a security job they will pay for CEH/CISSP cert test :S

ps. Sally Mae takes their sweet ass time getting back to you.

Congratulations Xploitz...I've only just found this thread now, but thought I'd chip in with my experiences and encouragement anyway.

First off, I just graduated from my degree this year and the experience has been priceless. I'm only 28, and first started University at 24, which was still a bit too old to be in the University system really.

Despite getting a really good grade on completion, the actual piece of paper has been virtually useless so far...although the knowledge, confidence and experience it's given me has been priceless.

At your age you've matured and you really want it now, so not only will you sail through but you'll come out with excellent grades at the end of it too!

The only thing I will say is that you'll also find yourself having to do lots of pointless crap that's frustratingly simple and mind numbingly boring, so don't get disheartened by it...just nail it instead

I say all power to you, and good luck with it...it'll take some getting used to, it took me about 18 months to be comfortable about being back at school, but it's all worth it in the end
