can connect to network, but not the internet

Just tested this method to verify it works with my IPW3945 so try this:

Navigate to K menu -> Backtrack -> Radio Network Analysis -> 80211 -> Misc -> Load IPW3945

my question is a bit unrelated with this topic. What is the "Load IPW3945" mean ? I have this card and I have troubles with enabling it in BackTrack. A lspci command shows it but I can"t see it with a ifconfig command.

Right-click then "edit" on any particular menu item will take you to the menu editor, which will show you the commands associated with any menu entry.
