why do you want to upgrade kernel ?????
i think it's not ultra necessary...........
I have WindowsXP and Backtrack 2 Final dual boot on my PC. I have been trying to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.21 but every time after the upgrading I cannot boot into Backtrack and I have to reinstall and retry.
I think I did everything right, including
#make oldconfig (also tried make menuconfig; make config)
#make
#make install
and copied and renamed the new bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz; I also updated lilo.conf and rerun lilo.
Any insights into my situation? I greatly appreciate your help!

Unfortunately, what with all the custom work done to the kernel and other applications on BT2, upgrading the kernel without knowing exactly what you are doing will end up breaking a lot of things. My advice would be to install another linux distribution (BT2 is based on the slackware distro, so you might try that) and learn how to upgrade that kernel before attempting to mess with the one on BT2. Installing the tools you want (my guess is you want the aircrack suite plus wireshark/kimset) on a 'vanilla' distribution is fairly simple, given enough time and preparation. That or you could buy a card that is better supported in the current version.
Good Luck.

Thank you, hobbes and theprez98, for your informative suggestions.
As you suggested, I do have a WUSB54GC, which is well supported by Backtrack 2 Final.
However, don't you think it's more convinient if your internal card also works? And it seems that Broadcom chipset has a better sensitivity than some other chipsets. I can't even make normal use of my DELL WLAN 1390 Mini card in Backtrack (not to say to run aircrack-ng, etc.) and I have seen people talking about their success after upgrading to 2.6.21.
I've also thought of installing the latest stable Slackware, but it's really HUGE, and does not by default have 2.6.21 inside. I'll have to learn to upgrade the kernel either way.
Thank you guys again!
my BRCM internal card run well, inject well, but have a little rate pb i need to put it in 54M rate each time.... but it works, it's broadcom minipci 4308........and im in BT2........

deadon and cog,
you may want to give exitonly's BT2_v2 ISO a shot.
