Don't update it. Too many issues. Is there any particular reason you want to update? Or is it just like a "Why not?" type thing?
I have fresh installation of BackTrack 5 R3 KDE 32 on VMware 8.
When I was prompted if I want to upgrade Kubuntu to 12.04, and pressed OK.
After downloading packages, trough install I had endless Errors and prompts asking if I would like to keep an old version of package or install new.
In the end I found, that BT is kinda replaced with Ubuntu 12.04.
So, the question is: How could i update BT5 R5 KDE-32 without this bummer? Should I useinstead?Code:su apt-get update
Thank you!
P.S. Sorry for if my question isn't 100% correct, I'm new at this forum.![]()

World Domination is such an ugly phrase. I prefer the term World Optimization.
I think there is a setting to disable distro updates. Check the settings for KPackageKit.
I had this same issue. I wen through the whole update not realizing what it was. when it finished it restarted computer and took me to a screen with a gray loggin box with a BT in the corner.
I tried logging in with the root toor and it says i cant use root to login. if i click an option to login consul it allows me but then when i get to the gui its a black screen and when i have none of the awesome options i had before the update and restart.
3 questions...
1. how can i log in tot hat gray box?
2. can i fix this?
3 if i need to re-install or restore to default then how do i do that?
We need more details... Is this a VM or HDD install? I this your default OS or do you use grub bootloader? Etc.. All these things are important. Although, honestly the solution you probably will get is just reinstall everything from a boot disk.![]()

You can use : aptitude hold
It will ignore any upgrades in packages when using safe-upgrade or full-upgrade (distro-upgrade)...
To release it: aptitude unhold
update and upgrade are 2 different things: update will update the dpkg list from repos, the upgrade will install a newer version of distro...
You could downgrade or reinstall BT5..If in VMware, you might find several issues when trying to downgrade..
From my personal stand point of view, I would never use either a VM or USB BT5 installs.....
In your case you can reinstall..But if you want to try VM BT5 downgrade, use the APT preferences file and modify it accordingly...See if you find no issues.
Luck...
I did this as a dual boot. It was all working fine. so the hard drive is partitioned giving me options to load at start.
so how do i delete and re install?
hello
I have been trying to update backtrack 5 r3 from lucid to 12.04.. not "why not" reason... I have a broadband connection.. from usb 3g
huawei e327...
and it doesn't detect it at all.. and ubuntu 12.04 does even 12.10..so I have to big question
#1-
why there's no backtrack based on a newer ubuntu version like 12.04 or 12.10...?
it doesn't support new tools..
about network manager I managed to get a wired connection and installed network manager to get my 3G connection to work.. but it's is not updated..and it doesn't support the network in my country...
#2-
Can I have a tutoriel... on how to upgrade backtrack from 10.04 to 12.04.. coz I tried almost every thing and it failes to boot..
and to where's the problem if backtrack cames with ubuntu 12.04 installed on it?
thanx
