Default FSTAB, Hostname, and Boot Partition?

    Greetings to all.

    Three quick questions:

    1. How do I change the hostname of the BT HD installation? There's no /etc/hostname, and /etc/hosts doesn't seem to change anything.

    2. How can I relocate /boot to it's own partition? Just move the files and update LILO?

    3. I've tried changing some entries in FSTAB, but they seem to be regenerated at bootup somehow. Everything I've changed seems to be erased. If this is the case, how does one make changes to the FSTAB file?

    Cheers.
    TC

Default Changing your Hostname on Hard Drive Install or VM

If you change your hostname in /etc/HOSTNAME to a different name other than "bt", the changes will not be saved. This is because in the /etc/rc.d/rc.M config, there is a static "bt" entry that resets your /etc/HOSTNAME config everytime /etc/rc.d/rc.M is ran. So the quickest and easiest way to change your hostname is to modify the /etc/rc.d/rc.M static entry. Here is the section in the config file that references /etc/HOSTNAME:

    # Initialize the networking hardware.
    if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 ]; then
    . /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
    fi

    ls -aA1b /etc/dhcpc | egrep ".info\$" | while read INFOFILE; do
    # this won't affect rc.M variables, because it's in >while read< loop
    . /etc/dhcpc/$INFOFILE
    echo "bt."$DOMAIN >/etc/HOSTNAME

    break
    done

    # Set the hostname.
    /bin/hostname $(cat /etc/HOSTNAME | cut -f1 -d .)

    # Start networking daemons:
    if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 ]; then
    . /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2
    fi

If you always want a static domain name (i.e. no matter if you are using DHCP for Domain Name), you can also remove the $DOMAIN string and put in a static domain name.

For your /boot partition question, I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish with the /boot relocation. Regardless if you move the /boot directory and modify your /etc/lilo.conf file, you still need to run lilo -v for the changes to take affect. For FSTAB, you might want to take a look at the other /etc/rc.d/* config files to see if one of them is resetting your configurations back to the original. Hope this helps.

Just expanding on what orbitalbleu has in bold in the above post...in the line

    echo "bt."$DOMAIN >/etc/HOSTNAME

ONLY DELETE bt DO NOT DELETE THE PERIOD AFTER bt in "bt." If you delete the period it will not work! Yours should look similar to mine here...

    echo "{-=Xploitz=-}."$DOMAIN >/etc/HOSTNAME

Special thanks for purehate in explaining my error of deleting the period, and balding_parrot and streaker69's advice as well. Thanks guys!

We know you didn't bleu. But I am curious why it took 3 months for someone else to catch it..lol. Still, a very nice procedure you wrote concerning this. If it wasn't for this post...I'd still be bt ~ # instead of {-=Xploitz=-} ~ #

Btw..the "-" mark cannot be the first character or you'll get your prompt looking like none ~ # I havent experimented with any other special characters though, and wrapping -=Xploiytz=- in quotes was a no go as well. Thats why I had to use the "{" character.

Just wanted to clarify one point. I got several PM's about this, so I figured I'd post another follow-up here.

In order to edit this document to get the cool name or whatever, you MUST use the command...

    nano /etc/rc.d/rc.M

and scroll until you see the line...

    echo "bt."$DOMAIN >/etc/HOSTNAME

and delete the letters bt ONLY! Leave the period. Put whatever you want in place of the bt. Now save with Control o and hit enter. Now press control x to exit....and reboot. On the log in page where you type in root, and toor...you should notice your new name there..if not...repeat these steps and make sure you follow the guide posted in this thread fully. Good luck.
