Would depend if they are shadowed as purehate pointed out already. Is this related to De-ICE or in general?

Yes, I am asking in relation to the second de-ice challenge.

Next unix passwords are "shadowed" and we must "unshadow"them. John can do this with the unshadow command

Pureh@te run # unshadow /etc/passwd /etc/shadow >passwd

I have now written my "salted" unix password to a file called passwd
Now I simply point john to the file

Since you cannot obtain both of those files in De-ice-1.110 until you have root You will need to approach it in another way. If you find yourself running them through john for hours and not getting anything I would try something else it does not take very long.

IF u have the has file why not use plain-text.com it is a rainbow crack table. it should bust the pw in seconds..
