If you have an Atheros WiFi card, with athk9 drivers, I have the same issue.
One guy told me to switch network manager and another one told me to downgrade to BackTrack 5R1 :-)
hello,
i just hacked my WEP encryption using backtrack r2

and i am advicing you to enable the static ip and static domain mode.
set your static
ip to: 192.163.1.1
netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.163.1.1
then the domain: 192.163.1.1
the search domain: 192.163.1.1
try if it works.![]()
Yes i have atheros wifi card. It cannot get ip adress if you are using WEP encryption. I changed my modem to WPA1/WPA2 and it works now. I tried to install another wireless manager program but all programs in linux comes with .tgz extension. I am newbie and i couldn't install that.

Try installing Network manager..search the repos:
aptitude search network-manager
If in repos, you should have something like this: network-manager, network-manager-gnome, network-manager-kde, etc..Just aptitude install network-manager network-manager-gnome (if gnome version), or change to kde accordingly.
It will automatically uninstall all wicd since only one can be working...No need to unisntall wicd.
Luck.
Try using wpa-wpa2 and see if it works..There must be something with wep and ath9k driver...If it works, then you might want to upgrade to BT5r3..
To upgrade to btr3: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/backt...acktrack-5-r3/
Just a quick question, did u set ur wep key in wicd to be hex or whatever type of wep ur connecting to?
i'm with bt5r3 , i'm starting to think that bt5 can't connect to a wep crypted key , because i can connect to a wpa one
i did set the wep to hex , i even tried using static ip , wicd showed ( connected to (my network essid) at ip adress (xx.xx.xxxx) ) but i still can't connect to internet , so i mouved to network manager and i didn't work there too
