Couple things if you are seeing the black screen... I know some folks see black after using startx but I couldn't even get that far. So I know this won't work for everyone but it did for me.

If you install to the hard drive and you don't have other OS's installed Grub will not give you a menu so hit Shift or Esc while booting to get options. I'm using a Gateway netbook with Intel chipset and I kept getting a black screen (it uses a 1024x600 resolution). If you're in Grub and you hit e you can edit the commands for the selected boot. I found in mine a vga=791 option that I replaced with vt.handoff=7 and it worked. I found the vt.handoff in the options for loading Mint which was working. That lets me boot into BT5R2 and I used a tutorial at Youtube called Editing / Adding Grub 2 Menu Entries (Ubuntu 9.10 and Up) to fix it permanently in Grub2 which is more difficult than the old Grub. Hope this helps someone and saves them hours of searching...
