First, you need to install the linux-headers according to your kernel version: type uname -r and see kernel version.

Then install headers: aptitude install linux-headers-x.xxx-xxx or whatever your linux headers are.

Download the driver from nvidia webpage.

Uninstall the nouveau driver and blacklist it. You have 3 ways of doing this. Using init, rebooting with recovery mode and with terminal in BT session directly.
if using the last option, need to reboot once you have uninstalled and blacklisted, then enter in recovery Mode.

Install the nvidia driver you previously downloaded.

    Reboot.

Now check if you have 3d support: type glxgears, or type glxinfo | grep direct

One thing that can happen when using nvidia propietary drivers, you can have many problems if there is a change in kernel version, let's say 2.6.38 and it cahnges to a new one like 3.2.0..You will need to reinstall drivers. Just an observation.

You should reboot with new driver...

    Hope it helps.
