Default How to establish a VPN Connection (without pesky network-manager)

I tried to install this damn Network-Manager on my Gnome 32-BT5 and that damn thing did not work.
    My /etc/network/interface was configured like

    Code:
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
But it didn't work out. Even that symbol didn't appear on my panel with nm-applet &.

And it looks like Wicd isn't supporting VPN either,
so are there other ways to get into a VPN on my machine?

    Problem solved:

Clear out the /etc/network/interfaces file, so that it is empty.
    Then,
    Code:
    #service network-manager restart
and finally, add a notification area to your panel manually.
You will see the icon there. (As far as you already hit nm-applet & after first install)
