wlan0 goes down when trying to connect

I just installed Backtrack 5 in Vmware and i'm facing some difficulties with it when trying to connect to a wireless network with my USB wireless dongle.

I am able to start it up with ifconfig wlan0 up. I'm also able to see wireless networks in the wicd network manager, but when trying to connect to one of the wireless networks my wlan0 goes down immediately. What am i doing wrong?

That Realtek RTL8188SU driver is problematic and spotty at best under BT5. Search the forums using "Realtek RTL8188SU" as a search query and you'll see what I mean. I would recommend browsing through the Working Hardware section of the forums and checking out viable alternatives to that card. Sorry to break it to you.

Yeah i already googled that chipset for 3 hours, tried a lot of different things explained on this forum and on other forums but nothing seems to work for me. Some people claim to have it working tho. Guess i have no other option than to get another USB adapter.

I can definitely recommend a TP-LINK TL-WN722N USB wifi card. Worked out of the box for me in BT5 R1 and R2. No muss, no fuss. It uses the AR9271 chipset and has a removable RP-SMA external antena so you can swap out the stock one for something better.
