Default Live works fine, full not so much

Sorry if this has been answered before, I've searched and didn't find anything that helped me.

I've been playing with Backtrack 2 final live CD on my desktop for a while now. I decided to install it instead of using the live version all of the time. The live install went smoothly. I set up lilo to dual boot backtrack with winXP and all seemed good.

Well, backtrack boots to the console. I can login as root, change my password, etc. I can xconfig without problem but when I try to startx I start running into problems.

It's odd because it runs fine on live.

    The error I get is

    Fatal server error:
    AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

XIO: fatal io error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after o requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I have an ATI Radeon x800.

i remember when i was running mandrake .. and i ran into this problem the drivers needed wernt out yet .. so i dont know if the x-series drivers are installed .. it has an option to auto config your ati card at login .. but if im reading your problem right your configing your card first before startx .? if so dont do that first start startx then connect to the net get the slackware version of the ati drivers and install them .. then config it .. that should work ...

    hope that helps a little.

Why would it work fine off the live CD and then not on the hard drive install?
