Nvidia driver install on BT5r2 Kernel 3.2.6

Hi everyone
Great release indeed , i thank the BT team for a great work.
Just want to share the working method of Nvidia drivers installation ( worked for me, i hope it does for you as well )
Instructions : gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
add these lines and save:
blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

Then:
apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*

Reboot

add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

apt-get update && apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings

Reboot then nvidia-xconfig

i have already blacklisted inside the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but every time i reboot i still see the nouveau driver up

i lsee it by doing lsmod command

any hint to finally remove em ?

Can you post your hardware specs please , are you sure your pc got nvidia graphics ? what kind of nvidia driver in equipped with ?

in my old hardware (32bit)+ geforce fx-5600xt i'm using this method(after prepare-kernel-sources):

1)# download & save in root your nvidia driver i'm testing with
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg1.run
2)chmod -x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg1.run
3)#open terminal:
echo options nouveau modeset=0 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf
4) update-initramfs -u
5) reboot
6)#out of x-server: root (enter)
toor (enter)
init 3 (enter)
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg1.run
(optional) fix-splash
reboot
7)after"login"(root/toor) play startx

in my pc with bt5-r2 gnome-32 WORKED-PERFECT!!! &
if you want enable compiz/emerald:
root@bt:~#apt-get install compiz compiz-fusion-plugins-extra emerald simple-ccsm fusion-icon

i have notebook toshiba satellite a-100 kinda old actually but equipped with a NVIDIA card
here is the result:

lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)

Thanks ghostdog67 for this straight step-by-step scenario.

I've tried today and unfortunately for me it didn't work. After all the bullets the result was a blank screen. I can't work into the dark so I was forced to reinstall the BT R2 Gnome 64 bit.

However I gave it a shout but I don't know why this matter is so "Russian rulet"

By the way: right now my hardware it's Dell Latitude 6500, Nvidia Quatro NVS 160M.

did another fresh installation of bt5r2 kde edition 32bit then,

added those lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

right after that i did

echo options nouveau modeset=0 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf

update-initramfs -u

rebooted and finally i had the NVIDIA 285 driver installed correctly.

I guess maybe something was broken during the installation setup but no idea too

Update: Using the johnjohnsp1's procedure I succeeded to make it to work

However invoking the optional command: apt-get install compiz compiz-fusion-plugins-extra emerald simple-ccsm fusion-icon didn't bring me happiness just troubles.

Bottom line: thanks folks for details and support
