Cannot control Brighness : fn + f2/f3 does not work : HP ProBook 4520s
Hi all,
Basically I cannot control the brightness. I have exhausted all avenues. Researched google, gone to ubuntu forum and this forum as well. Power Management does not have any control related to Brightness. Installed Compiz and still cannot control brightness. The screen is running at full brightness and it's hurting my eyes.

I am having the same problem though I haven't had much time to try and fix it.
Lenovo Y570 with GT555m (optimus)
It was working fine with Backtrack r1 64-gnome but when I did a clean wipe->r2 64-gnome I had this problem as well. I too would appreciate any solutions other people may have figured out.

hi guys...I now have done a clean install of Backtrack 5 R2.. everything is working fine am still having this issue of no being able to control the brightness of my laptop screen..
please someone guide me a solution for this problem..am I also trawling through ubuntu forums as well..

Open a terminal and try the following:
You'll get the list of your hardware.Code:# lspci
Take note of the number in front of VGA adapter (on my computer, it's 00:02.0)
Then, type the following:
It should work....Code:# setpci -s xx:xx.x F4.B=xx Where xx:xx.x = device number and xx = brightness in hexa (00 to FF) For me, I set the following: # setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=E0

On the same issue I have installed f.lux from here:

I can see the f.lux applet however I cannot change the color temperature. When I go to preference of this applet and choose a color temperature and then press Preview, the screen changes color momentarily and then goes back to full brightness again. I wonder if this is to do with GNOME shell as Backtrack runs GNOME 2.30.2 where as the latest version of GNOME is 3.2.
Any thanks a lot for trying to help however it is still not working. I still cannot control the brightness of the screen of my laptop.

Ok I got it sorted somehow.. this is what I have done..
I have gone into this folder..
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/
Then run this command:
root@bt:~# nano brightness
Shows my brightness value as 24 (which is the brightest). Here one can directly change this number. Lower means lesser brightness.
Anyway this command in the terminal will do the same job as well:
root@bt:~# echo $12 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
the above command changes my brightness to 2 from 24. Now I do not know what is the correlation here. Anyway would like to know other ways to control the screen brightness. Thanks to all.
You also can edit the file brightness directly with command..
nano brightness
My values are from 0 - 24..where 0 is the least brightness to 24 which is the highest.

Ok Now solved..
This is what I have done. I have installed ubuntu-tweak with this method:
Please note that you need to install the Lucid version (which is the commands do anyway)
add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
apt-get update
apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
After doing this I can control the brightness of the screen with fn+f2/f3 keys. Perfect. You can also go to System -> Preferences -> Power Mangement. You will now have a Display menu here.
