Default Backtrack 5 Acer Aspire -S3

    Hi,

This is my first post to the forums so I have put it in the beginners section. I am trying to resolve a bug on my acer aspire s3 with (4gb ram x86_64 kde backtrack 5r1) video problem with drm and mtrr. The laptop is dual boot with latest kubuntu which does not have the problem.

    Here is the /var/log/messages output

    Feb 15 20:34:06 bt kernel: [ 3.759581] i915 0000:00:02.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
    Feb 15 20:34:06 bt kernel: [ 3.867788] mtrr: type mismatch for b0000000,10000000 old: write-back new: write-combining
Feb 15 20:34:06 bt kernel: [ 3.877791] [drm] MTRR allocation failed. Graphics performance may suffer.
Feb 15 20:34:06 bt kernel: [ 3.888194] [drm] Supports vblank timestamp caching Rev 1 (10.10.2010).
Feb 15 20:34:06 bt kernel: [ 3.898319] [drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query.

It appears as if their is an mtrr allocation problem

    cat /proc/mtrr
    reg00: base=0x000000000 ( 0MB), size= 2048MB, count=1: write-back
    reg01: base=0x080000000 ( 2048MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
    reg02: base=0x0a7000000 ( 2672MB), size= 16MB, count=1: uncachable
    reg03: base=0x0a8000000 ( 2688MB), size= 128MB, count=1: uncachable
    reg04: base=0x0b0000000 ( 2816MB), size= 256MB, count=1: uncachable
    reg05: base=0x0ffc00000 ( 4092MB), size= 4MB, count=1: write-protect
    reg06: base=0x100000000 ( 4096MB), size= 1024MB, count=1: write-back
    reg07: base=0x140000000 ( 5120MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back
    reg08: base=0x14fe00000 ( 5374MB), size= 2MB, count=1: uncachable

There are several filed bugs here

    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13042
    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10508
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...el/+bug/210780

I have tried setting the enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1 as a boot option but this does not work. Also creating a file as described here fails http://codsplaice.blogspot.com/2009/...ting-with.html

I suspect that this is a kernel related bug as per the kernel bugzilla threads. So here is my questions

1)Is there any kernel later than the current one in backtrack 5 kde r1 - Linux bt 2.6.39.4 #1 SMP Wed Aug 17 21:42:30 EDT 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux which i can use ?

    2) Are there any updated intel graphics packages that i can use with backtrack 5 kde r1 possibly from ubutnu ?

I have tempoarily got round the slow X performance by disabling desktop effects in kde for now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Paul

I recall reading in another thread that the upcoming BackTrack 5 R2 will have a new kernel. That doesn't really help you now, but according to the thread, BT5r2 is due out next month. You may want to check out the redmine ticket system & report this to the BackTrack dev team.
If I could figure out how to scuba dive & hack at the same time, there would be nothing I couldn't do...
