The temperature increases very fast in my laptop with backtrack

I will to try to explain the most complete that I can ( sorry, my english is bad and the google translator is very bad )

I am a begginer in backtrack and linux

I installed Backtrack 5 RI KDE in my laptop computer, is an HP dv6-6166la

Processor Core i7
Hard Disk 1TB
RAM 6GB

I have dual boot with Windows 7 and Backtrack 5 but the problem is when I use Backtrack,
my laptop heats up too fast and the fans start to work

is normal??
how i can measure the temp in backtrack 5?

please explain easy, I´m a Windows user ( but i want to learn how to use Backtrack ) and it´s hard understand the commands in linux

From my experience with HP computers, some models have heating problems. Does it get too hot in windows too?

Hello.
You can use a few commands to view if its normal or not. You can use the command "top" (without quotes) on terminal and see if the proccess running on top is using a lot of resources as to heat the computer. If not, to me, something wrong happens.
You can measure the temperature on some sensors with "sensors" (without quotes) command.

But in Backtrack if I have a few minutes working the fans start work. Today, I did a test. The trouble is the Video Card, I´ve got an ATI 6770M, I searched in AMD web Site and I downloaded my drivers, but when I installed it and reboot the computer it doesn't work, I tried to boot in to the "Safe mode" but it was imposible. In mu old HP Centrino Duo it happens the same, it heats alot while doing basic stuff. I have BT5 R2 installed on the HD.

I'm using a dell l401x laptop i7 740qm and gt425m VGA. I have the same problem. I posted about this yesterday but no moderator made it visible. The laptop gets heated than it does in Windows 7 and fans are always noisy. Battery life also lesser than in Windows 7. I installed NVIDIA drivers, and also installed cpufrequtils and set the governor to powersave. But its still same.

Also someone in a post said that when he repartition the drive completely the problem was solved. I installed Backtrack 5 R2 in the end 40 GBs of the 500GB harddisk. Can this be the cause ?

Hi, hopefully they will provide an updated kernel in coming weeks which will provide some relief to the heat problems seen on laptops especially

Hi Guys,

I experienced the same issue, it was getting overheated and eventually turned off. I shifted my BT5 R2 to virtual and so far its working fine. You can try this approach also.

The possible reason I figured out is may be the drivers are not compaitable or recognised which is causing malfunctionning of hardware.
