BackTrack 4 Persistent USB Install Video

One of the great enigmas in BackTrack 3 was setting up a persistent USB key Install. Now that the BT4 pre-release is knocking at the door, and BT4 internals have changed so much, we thought we’d make a quick video tutorial.


A minimum 4GB USB key is required, 8 GB is optimal.

Great walkthrough

Just went through it, and no problems following it at all.

It boots just fine, but just got 1 problem, it wont save the stuff I have made :-(

And to make it better I have to confirm by pressing ENTER with every reboot/shutdown.

Do you have eny idea why this is?

is alot complicated becouse i'm not familiar wit linux but i have one question..

following the video tutorial at the end i have a persistent instaal of bt4 on usb now if i want to install on it the aircrack gui

how i need to proceed? and if i have success to intall it the installation remain on the usbdisk after restart it?

please if someone make a live usb of bt4 wit aircrack gui an Sponnwep2 spoonwpa.. is apreciate for newby

Hi ,

I tried this method twice and have gotten the same result :

rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes [sender]: Broken pipe (32)
rsync: write failed on "/mnt/sdc1/casper/filesystem.squashfs": No space left on device (28)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at receiver.c(298) [receiver=3.0.3]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (417 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(635) [sender=3.0.3]

Does this mean i should increase the size of the partition on sdc1??

maybe i am doing something wrong, but i've got the same rsync problems as Habibmonk.

So, it's really can fit to 4GB usb key, as written in 1st post? I don't really think so.

EDIT (with Solution):
i have 2 comments to above install video.
First: if you using 4GB USB stick it is better to specify partition size in cylinders (not in Megabytes as mentioned in video@00:32 ). So if your stick got for example 1016 cylinders then just create two 508 cylinders partitions. It will use entire space on stick, and BT4 will fit on it without any problems.

Second: Grub's menu.lst counts boot options from 0 not from 1 so if we want to boot by default "Start Persistent Live CD" then "default" option in menu.lst file should be set to 4 - not to 5 (see video@03:39)

I still gotting this error, please somebody help-me

i have 1 usb disk with functional BT4 (no persistence) with 4 GB and 1 usb disk with 4GB free

I have booted in BT4 Live Usb and tried to create another usb disk with BT4, but in the rsync command, i got the annoying:
"rsync: write failed on "/mnt/sdc1/casper/filesystem.squashfs": No space left on device (28)"

I tried the MB and the Cylinders method and got the error in both.

Someone have any suggestion ?

I found an easier way to install BT4 persistent mode, using an application called USB-Universal-Installer-1.7.9.3
The only problem is that it is a software for windows, but it is very easy and has many interesting options, including downloading the distro by own assistant.
