We have a VMware version of Backtrack available for download, just get that and create a new machine in VirtualBox and use that as the HDD maybe that will work for you.

I installed BT R1 gnome 32 on virtalbox 4.1.4, ubuntu 10.10.

Yes you get it and import the .vmdk files as a HDD in VirtualBox and it should work without any other interactions.
