Difference between bt5 and bt5 r1

Hello again.

It sseems, as if no one asked this before, so i do:

a) what is the difference between backtrack 5 and the r1 version?

b) which one is more recommended?

c) why ?

d) i am running bt 5 now for 4 months, nice customized.
if anyone recommended r1, is there a possibility to transport the customizations to r1 in some way?

Personally, I haven't found much difference between 5 & 5r1, but I don't consider myself a BackTrack expert either 5r1 feels more stable & has some updated tools. The dev team doesn't just throw a new version out for the heck of it; if they rev it, there's a good reason.

As far as customizations, I don't do much...my usual procedure is to back up what I need, then wipe & reinstall a newer copy of BackTrack.

Well friend here are the diffs :
New Kernel
New tools
New drivers

Overall better stability, bug correction.

Apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade should have you sorted out, with you customizations still there.

There is the R2 out though...

Hi again.

Thx very much for the short and clear answers.

The names confused me, some bt's before there was beta and final, so i thought, r1 means something like release candidate.
but fortunately i am using r1 from the first bt5 download.
seems,my intuition was right from the beginning.

r2 is out now? Right.

Are there any known bugs regarding dist-upgrade if upgrading r1 to r2?

I use the 64bit r1 with kde.

But after following the steps for the upgrade, it seems as everything worked fine EXCEPT THE KERNEL.

There is no 3.x kernel anywhere on my lap.

Lap is multiboot, so perhaps i would have to redirect it to the new kernel, BUT THERE IS NO NEW kernel.

Does anybody have similar problems ?

I didn't do the upgrade; wiped my current install & installed R2 fresh. I do have a vm image of R1 that I will try upgrading...will let you know how it goes.

I upgraded my R1 to R2, no problem. New kernel, new tools etc, no bug so far.

I had done both..first I had done apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade..that worked..

later on I burned a fresh copy of BT 5 R2 (64bit) and did a clean install on my laptop that worked too.. I am fairly new hence would not know the difference..

just Pyrit is giving me some grief ..should be able to sort it out soon..

I got my vm install of R1 upgraded. Had to use the --fix-missing parm a couple times, but everything worked ok.
