There are a couple things I think you can do that might be helpful. I was having a crappy time trying to go through some of the BT upgrades to R3 myself, although mine revolved around virtualbox, which for me I guess was kinda inevitable.
You can do the

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
without having to go through the hassle of completely reinstalling BT5R3 on your OS, and then just add the build upgrades individually. I have taken the liberty to list them all here:
