yes it's not made for that but you can make it, create a home user account (sudo group) then get everything working like in a normal desktop
I enjoy using the backtract KDE desktop with the beautiful bt5 wallpaper and showing it off to friends and if one day I need bt5 for pentesting then I will use the root account to spare the use of sudo in the user account, it's a perfect setup having backtract installed on hard-drive with both root and user accounts.
