    Try looking at
    /usr/local/etc/etter.conf
    -vs-
    /etc/etter.conf

    or you could do
    find / -name 'etter.conf'

As well, stay away from the GUI till you understand what yer doing syntax wise.

Do you know how to use other tools to scan for hosts? nmap...etc...??

In your ipconfig output, you do not have an ip assigned to wlan0, so thru wlan0 you cannot be in the subnet...What surprise me more, is the ppp0...

Try nmap -sC -sV -sS -T4 -O --osscan-guess 10.20.30.0/24...See if you are in the subnet...If so, with what interface?..Not wlan0 of course, because it does not have an ip assigned..
    Thru ppp0?????

Post the output...Please, analyze you ifconfig output..
Also you might want to type iwconfig and post output....

    Hi to all,
I have just installed backtrack 5R3 on my windows vista 32 bit system using oracle VM Virtualbox. I wish to edit ettercap GTK conf file as discussed in many forums and on the web to scan for hosts, but I am absolutely new to all this and to be honest dont understand how to do it! I typed in root@bt:~ nano /etc/etter.conf and it says unknown file directory in a new terminal whilst running backtack 5R3. Can any one help me with this and confirm which # to remove on the IP tables and if I need to change any other settings as mentioned above?
I have access to the wi-fi network In question already and wish to capture passwords. I am trying to learn all this Linux stuff also commands etc but will take me a while.
    Thanks and regards to all!
