    Default Wireless Antenna

I was reading the manual that came with my new antenna and it had this note in it. (2.4GHz Omni-Directional 7dBi Indoor Antenna)

"Note: Allow the cable to bend naturally. It’s recommended
that you place the antenna near wireless devices to avoid
excessive strain on the cable and connector."

Is this true? should the antenna be Near the wireless card?

I was under the impression that it should be placed a distant spot away (as long as the cable can span) but i maybe wrong.

    Please advise.

At the bottom it says this at your link....

** Warning**: The base unit is magnetic. Keep magnetic base at least 6 inches away from electronic devices; computers, TVs, video equipment, and tapes. Exposure to magnetic base may cause device or data on disks to become corrupted.

So does that answer your question?? If not...keep it the hell away from your laptop!! Now if you had an antenna without a magnetic base..the it would be ok...but since yours doesn't...keep it AWAY!

    ****EDIT****

BTW..I'm almost certain it was talking about putting it close (or within range) of your AP to get a good signal....not putting it close to your card.

perhaps its time to get that screw driver and get the magnet out.

i am curious why in one statement they say keep it NEAR the wireless device and in another they say keep it away.

    go figure. dlink ? ya.

I think its a warnig not to bend the cable near/at the connector... Basically keep a little slack in your cable.

ya i guess you're right about it being close to an AP.
I am not sure it could do much damage near a laptop considering todays HDs are nicely protected.

this is not to say the two magnets in the base arent strong. They are.

i will put the screwdriver away i guess and but my question still stands, if its close to the card will it improve its signal? i mean jeez isnt that the purpose of the cable ? to deliver the signal? now they're telling me to keep the antenna itself close. maybe i should disect this thing and rip the antenna out of the base and superglue it to the back of the laptop screen.

Say it isn't so!..ohhh... the humanity!

    ***EDIT***

But seriously..I don't know..just experiment...thats what I do..mine works best when stretched COMPLETELY out..far away from my card. Every antenna is different...even an exact duplicated antenna will have its quarks from the original antenna...they all have different "sweet spots" Like I said, just experiment with where you place it and you'll find your "sweet spot" as well.
