The #1 starting point for questions relating to why something in your operating system isn't working.
It might be helpful for newbs to think of BT4 as "Ubuntu 8.10" when looking for help. It's like Ubuntu, but better, plus a ginourmous swiss army knife consisting of every cool security tool available. For this (and other security/development reasons) you'll be downloading software from a different repository than most of the other newbs on the ubuntu forums. If you start off by asking for help w/ BT4 when all you need is help figuring out which partitions are what, you're going to confuse yourself and everyone else who's trying to help you.
Solution: First take the time to figure out where your repositories are and how you install and update this distro. Learn a little about kde, and especially, performing routine administrative functions from the cli (the terminal window located under 'system') Until you get your feet under you, think of it as ubuntu with a bunch of other cool stuff added. All of the other distro differences may well be in a mysterious cloud for you - don't worry - that will soak in with each passing week.
Breaking things and then having to fix them is how you learn. You'll get good help at those forums when you break something. Many of the people there are quite tolerant. Many will ignore "Please Help!" requests, but there are quite a few that actually have the patience to try and help you anyway! Thats no excuse of course, but it illustrates my point, which is that if you search the forums for answers first, write a legible question, post it in the right place, you'll probably get help there within minutes or a few hours tops, and it'll be from someone who really knows what they're doing. I knew UNIX, not Linux, and they helped me immeasurably.
I've been on BT4 less than 24hrs now, and thats just a first impression of the situation. Please feel free to correct me. I know what it's like to have something really basic not work, and have no idea where to start. Don't be put off w/ the idea that you can't find much basic help from BT afficionados.. There's a ton of help available elsewhere,
Well guys?
