anyone help me? i do all steps but when i type update-grub, show:
"/usb/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).
when i put /sbin/fdisk -l show
Boot
/dev sda1 *
/dev sda2 - Windows7
/dev/sda3 --extended
/dev/sda4 - Linux mint 11
/dev/sda5 - Linux swap
ok. This was a total waste of time
I am running Acer Aspire 4257Z with Intel@ HD Graphics
This is how I did it
1. Installed BT5R1
2. rebooted
3. apt-get update
4. apt-get dist-upgrade
rebooted
To the line1. Boot in to backtrack terminal (Just turn on the computer).
2. Log in to root.
3. type in "vim /etc/default/grub" (no quotes)
4. find a line that looks similar to this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text splash vga=791"
5. Move your cursor on top of the last quote on that line and press the letter 'i' on your keyboard (this turns vim in to inserting mode)
6. Add a space between vga=791 and the quote then type in i915.modeset=1 (The new line should look like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text splash vga=791 i915.modeset=1")
7. Hit escape on your keyboard and type in ':x' (with out the quotes.. Just hit the keys) and press enter. This will close the editor.
8. In your console type in 'update-grub' (no quotes)
9. Wait
10. Restart
11. ????
12. Log in to root, and type in startx... Profit.
but after point 12, the screen goes black as allways.
I have enjoyed Backtrack since before version 3 and I have never had any form of issues with it up to version 5
Sad to say, but if this cannot be fixed, why bother using it at all.
Missunderstand me correctly, I want to use it, i love to use it, I need to use it, but as of now, I cannot use it at all, and I do hate to
be the one that installes backtrack 4 just to be rocking backtrack, I feel that is a shamefull to the backtrack team.
So please, this is an down to my knees all out begging, please fix this issue so that I can finally use the version 5
PS.
Same issue with
BT5R2 Gnome/KDE 32/64bit
BT5R1 Gnome/KDE 32/64bit
Both are not working after upgrading to latest kernel (i.e doing the apt-get dist-upgrade)
BT5R1 works fine out of the box (until dist-upgrade) BT5R2 does not work at all after install, reboot then startx (black screen of death)
So please rename this thread to (NOTFIXED)![]()
yeah,
i appreciate the answers so far, but no luck
i too am booting bt5 from kde 32 from a cd.... no system installed, hoping / trying to install 5.2 on my hd....
i have tried 2 different bt5 cds and get the same problem as donilag above : a blank screen.
glad i still have my bt4 up and running....
maybe i should get 32 gnome????? anybody had that problem on gnome
as sammy hagar sang so eloquently..... " what took 2 hours, now takes all day"

Is there a version of the backtrack ISO with this fixed as default?

Not sure why this a big deal to fix for the official release its only one line the grub isnt it?
