setting up user permissions

I am trying to create user permissions but following the tutorial I found doesn't seem to work. I have not been able to find other tutorials beside this one http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...backtrack.html

When I try this tutorial "cp .config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu /etc/skel/.config/menus/cp: cannot stat `.config/menus"

error output: "/applications-kmenuedit.menu': No such file or directory"

That Tutorial was made for Backtrack4, currently there is no tutorial on how to create an unprivileged user on Backtrack5 and there is no need for one either.
Backtrack was meant to run under root.

Yes and no.

A lot of tools that come with backtrack need root privilege to work properly, but a lot of them don't. If you're pentesting a webapp, for example, then you could quite easily get away with logging into a non-root desktop and running all your tools from there.

I do sometimes wonder at the "do as I say, not as I do" mentality of some pentesters who will cheerfully sit at a root desktop, running root-privileged media players and feed agregators and other miscellaneous apps, surfing facebook (*ahem* researching something online *switches to another tab hurredly*) from their root-privileged browser, and all the while sitting inside their client's LAN and thereby posing more of a threat to the environment than some of the vulnerabilities they're there to find.

How many of those very people have then turned around and lectured their client about the principle of least privilege because they found a database login with the wrong privileges or something?

Can't you create a user in a normal way ? (useradd)
And add the new user to the groups you want ?!

Sure. The difference is that the root account has extra configuration already set, and that's what the original poster is trying to do.

We do not support adding users to BT. Root being the only user has all permissions granted to it.
Problem solved case closed.
