Alright, a few things. I finally got this working and this is what I've learned.

In order to do this you have to do it on a persistant file system. This will NOT work on a live USB that has not been modified to have a persistant file system. The easiest way to do this; Universal USB installer. I warn you though, running a persistant file system off of a USB drive is incredibly slow. I recommend you install BT5 (from within the live USB) to a seperate external hard drive on an EXT3 partition. Using swap space is up to you, but if you have limited memory it could come in handy.

After you have done this, follow the instructions as laid out by 12ud124. You have to prevent nouveau from loading in grub. It is the only thing that i've tried that works so far.

IMPORTANT: If you update-grub you MUST go back and re edit it to prevent nano from loading. You will have to do this from the console as the x server wont start if you have the nvidia drivers installed and nouveau loads on boot. My suggestion if you've already done this and you can't get x to start... use nano.

The 12ud124 step-by-step solution works smoothly for me.

Distro is permanent actually so I don't know what I can tell about the live running situations.

    Additional aspect:

Last night I considered that my system works too good so I decided to run nvidia-config and that's why because the Nvidia admin tool says that I'm running any nvidia drivers.

In my office I've two monitors so I would need to extend the image from the primary to secondary which never worked so far, the driver still duplicates image from one to another.

However the nvidia-config command modified the xorg.conf file and BOOM...no display after restart, just a big error log / display and like.

    Workaround:

    1. nvidia-uninstal
    2. mv xorg.conf from the /etc/X11/ folder.
    3. Follow again the procedure with the kernel compiling Nvidia drivers.
    4. You'll got the display back and running again.

This method works for me too!

    I have instaled BT5 r3, have Nvidia geforce 8800GTS!

The only difference is that i have downloaded newest drivers from nvidia site(304.51)!

    TY and have fun!
